Before I was a filmmaker, I was a painter, primarily working with acrylics and mixed media on wood and canvas. Sad Robots is a recent series of paintings on 12-inch wood squares. The four paintings on view are part of a larger series that draws on my interest in (or obsession with) the collision of art and technology. As far back as my undergraduate degree in math and philosophy, I have explored the battle between wild creative urges and mathematically precise experimentation. This conflict provides two different approaches for understanding the often bewildering and exciting world around us. My paintings capture the blend of humor and philosophy in my films.
