Gratian was senior co-emperor in the West (367-383 CE) with his brother Valentinian II (375-392 CE) and in the East with Theodosius I (379-395 CE). This coin was minted sometime between 378 and 383 CE and most likely is a reference to the victory of Gratian and Theodosius I over the armies of the Goths and Alans who had been ravaging the eastern part of the empire. The barbarians had recently been victorious at the battle of Adrianople, having destroyed the Roman army and killed Emperor Valens. The presence of only two Gs rather than three in the title AVGG references only Gratian himself and Theodosius and is thus an implicit rebuff to Valentinian II, who ruled under the regency of his brother.
