Collection History: Donated by Dean Fred B.R. Hellems in 1930.
This coin was minted during the reign of Maxentius (306-312 AD), the son of Maximianus co-emperor with Diocletian. When Diocletian established the Tetrarchy, Maxentius was married to Maximilla the daughter of Galerius. In 306, the Roman People revolted against Galerius and elevated Maxentius as Augustus. Maxentius then recalled his father from retirement for assistance. However, he was eventually overcome by the forces of Constantine and committed suicide in 310. Amy Clausen 2013.
