Antoniniani are often referred to as “Radiate(s)” because they consistently depict rulers with radiate crowns. The antoniniani were minted in two complimentary types during the three month joint rule of Balbinus and Pupienus. These types of sets implied a ‘spiritual solidarity’ that was in place during their short reign. Clasped hands symbolized the concord of the two emperors, even if the legend CONCORDIA AUGG is specific to Balbinus. Katherine Bentz 2011.
