March of the Weavers

The forward-hunched bodies of rebellious weaver s form a collective presence tha t fills the image an d propels the composition from left to right. Even as Kollwitz conveys the power of group action, each figure is distinguished wit h individualized facial expressions and gestures. The density of etched lines and the combination of beleaguered poses and clenched, sometimes raised fists suggests defiance and determination in the face of economic and social exhaustion.
