This coin was minted by Claudius in honor of his father Nero Claudius Drusus Germanicus and his victorious campaigns against the Germans. Drusus, the stepson of Augustus, was sent to Gaul in 13 BCE in response to riots happening there. During this time, a Germanic tribe had crossed the Rhine and was raiding Roman settlements. Drusus repelled them and, in retaliation, crossed into Germania. He conquered several Germanic tribes from 12 to 9 BCE, making it all the way to the Elbe river and the North Sea, the furthest penetration into German territory by the Romans. He consolidated his conquests with military installations along the Elbe, Weser and Maas rivers and reinforced the shore of the Rhine with a embankment and over 50 forts. For his victory, he was awarded many honors and political positions in Rome, the cognomen Germanicus, and a triumphal arch (pictured on the reverse) along the Via Appia.
